We'd like to thank the Royal Horticultural Society for featuring the Greening Brownfield community garden in the latest issue of their 'Growing Communities' magazine. It's a lovely piece with pictures of the garden in bloom and guest appearances from our very own Tom and Geraldine! You can read the piece by clicking the image above, or <a href="http://www.rhs.org.uk/Gardening/Community-gardening/pdf/Newsletter/GC-Autumn-2012" target="_blank">download a PDF of the magazine from the RHS website</a> (requires Adobe Acrobat).</div>

As you can hopefully tell from the photos, a great day was had by all. The atmosphere was relaxed, the food was fantastic and the company was convivial. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the day happen, especially the Glenkerry crew for the delicious food, and the weather gods for smiling on us in the middle of the wettest week in ages. Roll on Harvest Festival 2012!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Harvest festival poster</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Today's the day.... it's the Harvest Festival!<br />
<br />
The gardens will be open from 11-4 as part of Capital Growth's <a href="http://www.capitalgrowth.org/opengardens/">Edible Open Gardens Day</a>. It's a great opportunity to see how the garden's bloomed over the summer. We have tumbling tomatoes, swelling pumpkins, beds of herbs and some lovely, rangy wild-flowers around the children's area. We also have a sunflower that's nearly as tall as Carradale House (honest!)<br />
<br />
Lunch will be served from 1-3pm. We'll have a barbeque serving organic meats plus veggie and vegan options. Please bring some food to share plus whatever you'd like to drink.<br />
<br />
There will be a dazzling display of cakes from the Greening Brownfield Cake Club, all baked around a theme of 'Harvest'.<br />
<br />
We'll also have a Give and Take Tombola. If you can, please bring a homemade or homegrown item - a bowl of tomatoes, a loaf of bread, a jar of pickle - and enter it into a raffle to swap for someone else's homemade treat. <br />
<br />
Hope to see you there at 1pm. We're located on Andrew Street, E14 0SW - the old tennis court outside Carradale House. Click the link below (marked 'Location') for a map.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">photo: the good gym</td></tr>
</tbody></table>within forty minutes the place was totally transformed: the greenhouse was moved to the back of the garden, our nascent rockery shipped to its future home behind the shed, planters were painted, and litter and weeds cleared away. <br />

</a></div>The next meeting of the Greening Brownfield Cake Club will be on Saturday September 3rd 2011 as part of Capital Growth's <a href="http://www.capitalgrowth.org/training/opengardens/">Edible Open Gardens Day</a>. We'll be having a Harvest Festival with a barbeque, a seed and produce swap shop, guided garden tours, a lemonade stand and, of course, a table displaying all your beautiful cakes. The theme is "Harvest". Dust off those rolling pins, aprons at the ready - let's get baking!</div>Greening Brownfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13345907889912893336noreply@blogger.com0Tower Hamlets, London E14 0SW, UK51.5140861 -0.009628499999962514351.5134291 -0.010361999999962514 51.5147431 -0.0088949999999625145tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1316188829531161419.post-42925838050459497002011-08-14T17:31:00.001+01:002011-08-14T17:33:49.792+01:00the good gym<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thegoodgym.org/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="137" src="http://www.simpl.co/img/idea/147_121_goodgym_logo2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
we first heard about <a href="http://www.thegoodgym.org/">the good gym</a> on <a href="http://www.twitter.com/greenbrownfield">twitter</a>. a tower hamlets-based organisation, they give people a reason to exercise that goes beyond the physical. drop them a line and they'll put you in touch with a less mobile person in your local area. you then jog to that person's house and drop off a newspaper / some milk / a piece of fruit etc, have a little chat, then continue your run. it's simple and fun, and a great way to enhance your post-exercise endorphin buzz!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thegoodgym.org/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="120" src="http://www.thegoodgym.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/how-it-works.png" width="320" /></a></div><br />
they also operate a scheme called '<a href="http://www.thegoodgym.org/fixup/">fixup</a>' in which teams of runners help out local organisations in a short burst of focused activity. setting off from york hall in bethnal green, a team of 10-20 people will run to a venue, volunteer for half an hour (preferably at tasks that involve a bit of muscle power rather than, um, filing), then run back.<br />
<br />
and tomorrow it's our turn! on monday 15th august 2011 the good gym team will be running to the greening brownfield garden, where among other things, they'll help us tidy up <a href="http://greeningbrownfield.blogspot.com/2010/08/shifting-soil-all-12-12-tonnes-of-it.html">the soil mountain</a> and move the greenhouse from one end of the garden to the other.<br />
<br />
we're very grateful to ivo and the team for all the help, and can't wait to meet everybody. stay tuned for before and after pictures, and check <a href="http://www.twitter.com/greenbrownfield">twitter </a>for livetweeting updates. here's hoping it doesn't rain! <br />

Erno Goldfinger made sure each resident on the Brownfield Estate has a balcony - some flats even have two. But there's nothing like a proper outside space to really experiment with fun, messy, sensory play.<br />
<br />
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjENDiVcCu8udzjzCG6CgKdviwQP-Q-XZBoaUDHJi282ORB4eM6QJm_UZNrxrrnS0geX44qJvToTCG6ERmIQqQTh8P9rNWS6P8GuU1_nwEGgS28BjmVP5dfVkmgm-kIyCnwA2q6A-dV0Qo/s1600/1311192385567.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjENDiVcCu8udzjzCG6CgKdviwQP-Q-XZBoaUDHJi282ORB4eM6QJm_UZNrxrrnS0geX44qJvToTCG6ERmIQqQTh8P9rNWS6P8GuU1_nwEGgS28BjmVP5dfVkmgm-kIyCnwA2q6A-dV0Qo/s320/1311192385567.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And so it was that today the Greening Brownfield Garden ended up as the location for a Rainbow Spaghetti Tea Party. At the flat we cooked up some spaghetti, mixed in some oil, divided it into portions and added liquid food colouring to each one. We ended up with Rainbow Spaghetti in hues of red, orange, yellow, purple and blue, which we then carried down to the garden along with paper plates, spaghetti tongs and some cutlery, for an extra-special tea party.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJk8R_ZcHFz_aE7yMm0XNBtmK7x23MCglkVqP0cvXXBjUugOgI5Qwb7-zidrLJZlGxBaYmUT-zRh4SZ5xo1W0uv9KG7Gbl5mdL6UTASWp6xdgrg2VoxF890BoAmMoC8C5J7OApsvvSjaU/s1600/1311171036836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJk8R_ZcHFz_aE7yMm0XNBtmK7x23MCglkVqP0cvXXBjUugOgI5Qwb7-zidrLJZlGxBaYmUT-zRh4SZ5xo1W0uv9KG7Gbl5mdL6UTASWp6xdgrg2VoxF890BoAmMoC8C5J7OApsvvSjaU/s320/1311171036836.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The kids loved investigating the colours, textures and even the taste (it is, of course, completely edible). Best of all, they were improving all kinds of skills, from literacy (learning words such as 'squishy', 'slimy' and 'slippery', plus colour naming) to improving their motor skills by gripping, squishing and lifting spaghetti strands and clumps. It's another way in which the Greening Brownfield garden is improving the lives of local residents - not just providing a food growing space, but giving younger residents opportunities to engage with the world around them through creative, stimulating outdoor play.<br />
