It's been a while, so we thought you might like to take a look at some of the latest activity in the Greening Brownfield garden.

We scored some free mulch, which will gradually compost down to provide soil to fill our planters, and meanwhile is great as a top dressing to suppress weeds.

The bug hotel is finished, providing a haven for all the creepy-crawlies over the winter. A bug-friendly garden is a wildlife-friendly garden!

We have a beautiful new communal flowerbed, and have erected some much needed screening against the A13, which runs behind the garden.

We also have a handy hook for storage. No more hoses snaking across the ground for us. :)

At the entrance to the garden, we now have a beautiful rockery with a solar-powered water feature.

And in the shed, we're collecting and storing seeds ready to plant out in the spring.

A big big thank you goes out to everyone involved for all their hard work. Roll on 2012, we can't wait to get growing again!

Saturday 3rd September 2011 was the Greening Brownfield Harvest Festival. As you can hopefully tell from the photos, a great day was had by all. The atmosphere was relaxed, the food was fantastic and the company was convivial. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the day happen, especially the Glenkerry crew for the delicious food, and the weather gods for smiling on us in the middle of the wettest week in ages. Roll on Harvest Festival 2012!

Today's the day.... it's the Harvest Festival!

The gardens will be open from 11-4 as part of Capital Growth's Edible Open Gardens Day. It's a great opportunity to see how the garden's bloomed over the summer. We have tumbling tomatoes, swelling pumpkins, beds of herbs and some lovely, rangy wild-flowers around the children's area. We also have a sunflower that's nearly as tall as Carradale House (honest!)

Lunch will be served from 1-3pm. We'll have a barbeque serving organic meats plus veggie and vegan options. Please bring some food to share plus whatever you'd like to drink.

There will be a dazzling display of cakes from the Greening Brownfield Cake Club, all baked around a theme of 'Harvest'.

We'll also have a Give and Take Tombola. If you can, please bring a homemade or homegrown item - a bowl of tomatoes, a loaf of bread, a jar of pickle - and enter it into a raffle to swap for someone else's homemade treat.

as part of the harvest festivities next saturday 3rd september, we'll be running a give and take tombola. just bring something home-made or home-grown - a jar of jam, a bowl of tomatoes, some chutney, a loaf of bread, maybe even a cake from the cake club - and then we'll have a super-randomised-prizes-for-all-tombola!

like a secret santa, but harvest themed.
like a raffle, but everyone who gives something gets a prize.

the lovely kath will be running the stall on the day, so hand in your homemade goodies when you get there. the tombola will be called later in the day. we'd wish you luck, but you won't need it, because everyone's a winner!

so on monday the good gym's team of healthy, hard-working runners arrived to help kick our little garden into shape. our trusty maintenance man clive was there to direct the proceedings, and the results are a testament to the power of teamwork.

within forty minutes the place was totally transformed: the greenhouse was moved to the back of the garden, our nascent rockery shipped to its future home behind the shed, planters were painted, and litter and weeds cleared away.

as a result the entrance to the garden is far more welcoming and spacious (pics to follow), while the garden layout as a whole is more logical and uncluttered.

The next meeting of the Greening Brownfield Cake Club will be on Saturday September 3rd 2011 as part of Capital Growth's Edible Open Gardens Day. We'll be having a Harvest Festival with a barbeque, a seed and produce swap shop, guided garden tours, a lemonade stand and, of course, a table displaying all your beautiful cakes. The theme is "Harvest". Dust off those rolling pins, aprons at the ready - let's get baking!

we first heard about the good gym on twitter. a tower hamlets-based organisation, they give people a reason to exercise that goes beyond the physical. drop them a line and they'll put you in touch with a less mobile person in your local area. you then jog to that person's house and drop off a newspaper / some milk / a piece of fruit etc, have a little chat, then continue your run. it's simple and fun, and a great way to enhance your post-exercise endorphin buzz!

they also operate a scheme called 'fixup' in which teams of runners help out local organisations in a short burst of focused activity. setting off from york hall in bethnal green, a team of 10-20 people will run to a venue, volunteer for half an hour (preferably at tasks that involve a bit of muscle power rather than, um, filing), then run back.

and tomorrow it's our turn! on monday 15th august 2011 the good gym team will be running to the greening brownfield garden, where among other things, they'll help us tidy up the soil mountain and move the greenhouse from one end of the garden to the other.

we're very grateful to ivo and the team for all the help, and can't wait to meet everybody. stay tuned for before and after pictures, and check twitter for livetweeting updates. here's hoping it doesn't rain!

A great place for messy play

One of the disadvantages of living in a flat in a tower block is the lack of garden. Erno Goldfinger made sure each resident on the Brownfield Estate has a balcony - some flats even have two. But there's nothing like a proper outside space to really experiment with fun, messy, sensory play.

And so it was that today the Greening Brownfield Garden ended up as the location for a Rainbow Spaghetti Tea Party. At the flat we cooked up some spaghetti, mixed in some oil, divided it into portions and added liquid food colouring to each one. We ended up with Rainbow Spaghetti in hues of red, orange, yellow, purple and blue, which we then carried down to the garden along with paper plates, spaghetti tongs and some cutlery, for an extra-special tea party.

The kids loved investigating the colours, textures and even the taste (it is, of course, completely edible). Best of all, they were improving all kinds of skills, from literacy (learning words such as 'squishy', 'slimy' and 'slippery', plus colour naming) to improving their motor skills by gripping, squishing and lifting spaghetti strands and clumps. It's another way in which the Greening Brownfield garden is improving the lives of local residents - not just providing a food growing space, but giving younger residents opportunities to engage with the world around them through creative, stimulating outdoor play.

Greening Brownfield Cake Club

Sunday 6 June 2011 - the day of the nationwide Big Lunch - saw the inaugural meeting of the Greening Brownfield Cake Club. Taking inspiration from the Clandestine Cake Club movement, the cakes are baked around a particular theme, and the event is not a competition but rather a celebration of the wonderfulness of cakes.

Our theme, fittingly, was Cakes Made From Vegetables Or Anything Else You Could Theoretically Grow In The Greening Brownfield Garden, which meant that beetroot, parsnips, carrots and apples all graced the Cake Club table.

Part 2: 2010

In early 2010, Greening Brownfield started planning new estate-improving activities. Jennifer and Eleanor, two members of the Balfron and Carradale Residents’ Committee, persuaded HARCA to invest in brightening up the empty, grey space – once a children’s playground and a nursery school garden – in front of Balfron Tower.

Party-goers enjoyed tea and cake while getting to know their neighbours. Residents planted wild flowers and spring bulbs in the raised beds, while children entered a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition and made chalk drawings on the paving stones.

Meanwhile, plans were afoot for the transformation of the tennis court – the area which would eventually become the community garden. Jennifer and Eleanor put posters up around the estate to drum up new recruits for Greening Brownfield, and started holding monthly planning meetings. Along with a hardy team of volunteers, they cleared the tennis court of the weeds, brambles and broken glass which had made the space their home.

Freecycle was scoured for wooden pallets, discarded tyres and unwanted play equipment, while the London Borough of Tower Hamlets donated 12 and a half tonnes of compost (formerly Tower Hamlets residents’ kitchen scraps!) And from these humble components, in the late summer of 2010, Greening Brownfield began to fashion a garden.

They piled tyres on top of each other and filled them with soil. They placed builders’ bags of soil on top of pallets and planted them up with whatever they could get their hands on: cabbages, courgettes, cucumbers, squash, broccoli and lots and lots and lots of kale. Best of all, this DIY approach garnered plaudits in the form of a prize in the Edible Estates competition, as runner-up in the ‘Create and Craft’ category.

By the end of 2010, residents from Balfron Tower, Carradale House, Glenkerry House and other areas of the Brownfield Estate were attending the monthly planning meetings, all with different skills to bring to the project.

The hotch-potch of tyres and bag gardens were slowly replaced by beautifully crafted planters created from the Freecycled wooden pallets. And with funding in place from Grow Your Own Tower Hamlets and Capital Growth, 2011 began to look like it might be a very good year for Greening Brownfield...

Part 1: 2009

Affordable live / work space in the East End of London. It's a siren call few artists can resist, even if said space is located in a high-rise tower block in deepest Poplar, far from the creative hubs of Shoreditch, Hackney or Dalston.

Thanks to a pioneering scheme started in 2009 by Bow Arts Trust and Poplar Harca, the vacant flats of Balfron Tower and Carradale House were let to local artists and creative practitioners, on the condition that they made a sustained contribution to the communities of the estate.

When artists Anna Sexton and Anna Bauer moved in, they saw an opportunity for a project that would make a big difference to residents' lives. Brown by name and grey by nature, the Brownfield Estate had seen its green spaces neglected and its play areas torn up.

The brutalist playground at the base of Balfron Tower - an integral part of Goldfinger's initial design, featuring play towers, a slide, a sandpit and a paddling pool - was emptied and left to crumble, unloved save for the odd graffitied tag.

The two Annas, working with members of the Balfron and Carradale Residents' Committee, decided to see if the old tennis court could be reclaimed and reused as a vegetable growing space for the local community.

Last month we cleared all the winter veg (including loads of gorgeous purple sprouting broccoli) so we could get cracking on our summer crop. Here's a picture of one of the younger members of our crew fortifying himself with a biscuit to give him strength for the mission ahead. Altogether now... ahhhhh.

Imagine the nation out in the streets, sprucing up the area and starting new loving partnerships with the land."

We couldn't agree more, and will be down at the Greening Brownfield community garden and other parts of the Brownfield estate ripping up weeds and making our locale a little more gorgeous-looking. Last Sunday 30th May 2010 saw another successful planting event take place outside the Social Club, Balfron Tower. Go and check out the beautiful hand painted signs and the first green shoots peeking through!

Having secure 2 grants from Capital Growth and Grow Your Own via Tower Hamlets Healthy Borough Programme the volunteers who, with your help at some point over the last year, GB has been able to go ahead and start creating flower and food growing spaces outside Balfron Tower and on the disused tennis courts outside Carradale House.

Jennifer and Eleanor from the Balfron and Carradale Estate Committee are leading a working party working with Anna & Anna from Bow Arts Trust Live/work scheme to shape the different parts to the project. We are currently looking for more help with the different aspects of the projects - see below.

Greening Brownfield has secured Capital Growth funding

Superb team work has managed to secure over £1,000 of funding for capital costs to create a temporary food growing garden and community space on the old tennis courts outside Carradale House, as part of the Brownfield Estate.

Capital Growth is an ambitious programme set up to support 2,012 new community food growing spaces for London by 2012.

Funded by the Lottery, Local Food and the Mayor of London, and a project of London Food Link and Sustain.

This exciting break through has led to Poplar HARCA, on behalf of Greening Brownfield being able to secure a further £2,000 of funds to support greening works across the Balfron and Carradale outdoor areas...

The ideas shared on the day;

Working together to create different types of green spaces on and in Brownfield Estate
Improving communual areas with flowers etc.
Mentor those with small areas of their own who lack the skills
Improve play area

Suggested actions;

Created a shared vision for the all the different aspects
Meeting regularly to discuss the progress
Have meetings & work groups who meet in the week and at weekends to ensure an opportunity for everyone to contribute

The group has the following experience members are willing to share;

Teaching gardening to community groups
Experience of organic gardening growing veg, soft fruity and flowers
Willing to attack areas i.e. digging
Florist skills via floral and planting demonstrations
Raised bed building skills
Help with general tasks

Greening Brownfield is born - 12th December 2009

Following a series of successful public meetings, plant swapping, cake sharing and generally good vibed get togethers Greening Carradale evolved into Greening Brownfield off the back of a meeting 12.12.2009.

Anna & Anna set up the meeting to create a new more active group of local people so more energy could be created to get the different garden and play area plans off the ground and becoming a reality.
